Seed Oils
Definition
Seed oils are cooking oils pressed from seeds — soybean, sunflower, canola, corn, safflower.
Why it matters
They have become a popular villain online, blamed for inflammation and disease. When actually tested, replacing saturated fat with them lowers LDL cholesterol and, in controlled trials, reduces heart events. The claimed inflammatory harm has not held up well in humans.

Semaglutide
Definition
Semaglutide is the medicine sold as Ozempic and Wegovy. It mimics a gut hormone that reduces appetite and improves blood sugar.
Why it matters
It produces large weight loss, but its heart benefits appear earlier than the weight loss can explain — which suggests it is acting on blood vessels and inflammation directly.

SGLT2 inhibitors are diabetes pills that make the kidneys flush excess sugar out in the urine.

Why it matters
Highly trained athletes are particularly prone to it. Years of hard exercise raise pain tolerance, build backup blood vessels, and teach people to ignore discomfort. The result is severe disease that produces no warning until something serious happens.

Sleep Apnea

Why it matters
During plaque formation they migrate inward and build the fibrous cap, which is protective. But they can also change character and take on cholesterol themselves, contributing to the plaque they are covering.

Why it matters
An underpowered trial that finds nothing has not shown the treatment does not work — only that the study was too small to tell. The two conclusions are constantly confused.

Stenosis is narrowing — usually described as a percentage, like a 70 percent blockage.
Why it matters
It gets more attention than it deserves. Most heart attacks come from plaques that were nowhere near 70 percent narrowed. What the plaque is made of matters more than how tight the squeeze is.

Why it matters

The subendothelial space is the narrow gap just beneath the artery's inner lining, between that single layer of cells and the muscle beneath.
Why it matters
This is exactly where ApoB particles get trapped and where every plaque begins. Everything else in atherosclerosis follows from what accumulates in this thin layer.

Sudden Cardiac Death
Definition
Sudden cardiac death is when the heart abruptly stops and the person dies within minutes, often with no prior warning.
Why it matters
In older adults it usually follows a heart attack. In young athletes the causes are different — inherited heart muscle or electrical conditions. Fast CPR and a defibrillator are what change the outcome.

Definition
A surrogate marker is a stand-in measurement used because the thing you really care about takes too long to observe.
Why it matters
Cholesterol is a good surrogate — lowering it genuinely reduces heart attacks. Others have failed badly: drugs that improved the number on the report while patients did no better, or worse. A moved number is a promise, not a result.

A systematic review searches for every study on a question using a pre-declared method, then assesses them by consistent criteria.
Why it matters
The pre-declared search is the point. It prevents an author from quietly including studies that support their view and omitting those that do not.

Systolic Blood Pressure
Definition
Systolic blood pressure is the top number — the pressure in your arteries while your heart is squeezing.
Why it matters
In adults over about 50 it is the more important of the two numbers, because arteries stiffen with age and that stiffness pushes the top number up.
